Can I use my Preferred Pharmacy?

Updated: Jul 23

Oaks Nursing Center Burnet, TX

At Oaks Nursing Center, we understand that medication management is a crucial aspect of our residents' care. Often, new admissions and their families inquire about the possibility of using their preferred pharmacy. The short answer is, yes, you can choose your preferred pharmacy, but there are a few important considerations to keep in mind.

For Long-Term Residents

If you are a long-term resident not under skilled rehabilitation services such as Medicare or Managed Care coverage, you have the flexibility to use your preferred local or mail-order delivery pharmacy. However, families must ensure the timely delivery of medications and that they are packaged in a unit dose setup, such as blister packs. Additionally, liquid medications must be in bottles with measurement increments that allow accurate dosing.

Emergency Situations and Facility Pharmacy

There may be instances where the facility needs to use our own pharmacy or emergency medication kit located on-site. This typically occurs in acute or critical situations, such as when a newly prescribed antibiotic requires an initial dose or when a new order for one-time-only dosing is issued. Our goal is to ensure that all residents receive their medications promptly and safely, especially in urgent situations.

Short-Term Rehabilitation Residents

For residents on short-term rehabilitation services under Medicare or Managed Care, there is a requirement to use the facility-contracted pharmacy due to consolidated billing. This ensures streamlined billing and medication management for residents under these specific services.

Hospice Services

If your loved one is receiving hospice services, the hospice provider may choose to use their contracted pharmacy, provided they adhere to the packaging and delivery guidelines mentioned above.

Respite Stay Residents

Residents on a respite stay are required to supply their medications for the entire duration of their stay. These medications are not filled through the facility’s pharmacy, so it is essential to ensure that all necessary medications are brought in and properly managed during the respite period.

At Oaks Nursing Center in Burnet, TX, we strive to accommodate our residents' preferences and needs regarding their medication management. By understanding the guidelines and ensuring proper packaging and delivery, families can choose their preferred pharmacy with confidence. Our primary goal is to provide seamless and effective care, ensuring the health and well-being of all our residents. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please feel free to contact our staff for assistance.
